When the door to Damon’s bedroom opens and Caroline and Damon pull away from each other, Caroline can tell who’s at the door just by the devastated look on Damon’s face. Or—at least—she can tell who Damon thinks it is.
His breathy, guilt-laden, “Elena,” confirms her suspicion.
Caroline refuses to look at her friend and instead directs her gaze back to the pillow her hair had just been splayed on.
“Guess again,” Katherine says as she closes the door and steps into the bedroom, confirming Caroline’s worst nightmare. “Mommy, daddy, and baby make three,” she singsongs as she walks over to the bed. She laughs then. “Although you two are also almost brother and sister too…in a way. What a twisted little family we are, right?”
Damon growls low and Caroline watches as he strategically positions himself in between her and Katherine. She wonders momentarily if he does this because he noticed the way she started trembling at the confirmation that it is Katherine or if he does it because it’s her and he doesn’t need anymore reason to protect her than that.
(She knows she will always come second to Elena, but she likes to think this means something to him.)
Katherine situates herself on the edge of the bed and leans toward Damon. “I didn’t know you two were this close,” she says, “but this could be fun, you know.”
“Get out, Katherine,” Damon tells her coldly.
“But we have so much to talk about,” Katherine pouts.
Caroline finds her voice. “I am not your puppet, Katherine, and Damon is not your toy.”
Katherine tilts her head to one side. “But don’t you want to know why I chose you? Don’t you want to know how I knew I could choose you?” she asks.
A part of Caroline is curious. How did Katherine know Damon had fed her blood earlier that day? How did she know she’d turn? In the grand scheme of things, however, it doesn’t really matter—and anything out of Katherine’s mouth is just as likely to be a lie as it is to be the truth, so it’s a moot point in any case.
When Caroline just glares at her, Katherine shrugs. “You’re wrong, you know,” she says as she gets back off the bed. “You will always be my puppet and Damon will always be my toy. Just as you two will always need each other. It’s family, my children.”
They hear her chilling laugh echo down the hallway, and Caroline is thankful when Damon wraps his arms around her until she stops shaking.

“Do you hate what you are?” Caroline asks, her voice hoarse after arguing with Matt, trying to make him understand.
Stefan hates when she asks questions like this. Not because he hates that she’s asking, but because he doesn’t want to have to think about the answer. “I hate what I know I can become,” he answers carefully. “I hate what I once was.”
“And now?” she presses, her voice clearing up, although now she has this whiny tone about her, and he knows she’s about to cry.
He moves over to where she is on his couch and puts an arm around her shoulder.
“Now I’m just very careful. I have Elena and she is my whole world. I’m grateful I’ve lived long enough to be with her.”
Caroline does cry at that, and Stefan curses himself for saying the exact wrong thing.
Caroline throws herself at him and cries on his shoulder as she incoherently tries to tell him about her problems with Matt and her unwanted feelings for Tyler and how she doesn’t know what she wants, but that it hurts and she’s scared she’s going to do something stupid because she doesn’t have someone like he has Elena to keep her from going off the deep end—her words, not his.
He holds her close and strokes the back of her head, his fingers running carefully through her uncharacteristically tangled hair.
“Will it ever get easier?” she mumbles against his chest half an hour later when her sobs have turned to sniffles.
He nods. “Eventually,” he tells her sagely, only half believing his own words. He still thinks he got lucky with Elena, but he can’t tell Caroline that.
“Will Matt ever accept me…like this?”
He groans internally—he does know what it’s like to be frightened of the idea of vampires, after all. “I don’t know,” he answers, “but if he doesn’t, someone else will.”
She pulls away from him and looks at him with her tear stained face and brightening eyes. “Are you sure?”
He nods, and watches as she smiles.
He’s glad he finally said something right.

Summary: Matt and Elena reminisce about their life before.

“Do you ever think about us, Elena?” he asks her one night when they’re alone.
They’re at the Grill with Stefan and Caroline, but Caroline excused herself to the ladies room and Stefan had to go talk to Damon for a moment and it’s just the two of them. It’s the first time they’ve been alone together in so long, and Elena’s just remembering how nice it used to be with him. It was never exciting with him, but she was happy. Matt was her first love, and that is something she knows she’ll never forget.
“Sometimes,” she admits, glancing at the table while stirring her drink with her straw. “When things get…complicated with Stefan, or when Damon does something stupid, or when my life starts spinning out of control…yes. Sometimes I remember how easy things used to be with us.”
“Do you ever miss it?”
Elena sighs. “I miss the peacefulness. I miss the innocence of us. I miss how uncomplicated my life was back then.”
“You didn’t answer the question,” he points out.
Elena looks up at him. “I don’t know,” she answers. “We were happy, though. And now…happiness is harder to come by with all that is going on.”
Matt doesn’t ask what she means—he’s learned to live with the fact that all his friends keep secrets. “Remember the time we snuck over twenty kids into the Lockwood pool the summer after freshman year?” he asks out of nowhere in an attempt to cheer her up.
Elena laughs at the memory. “And the next day, Tyler called you because he could not figure out why his yard was completely trashed!”
“So we had to cover for him and say he was with you that whole night studying so he didn’t get in trouble.”
Matt smirks devilishly, an expression she rarely sees on his face anymore. “That party really did get out of hand, didn’t it?”
“Yeah, it did, but it certainly was fun, wasn’t it?” she counters with an evil smile.
“We could always try for a repeat performance.”

Summary: When everyone is gone and Caroline's alone, she seeks out Klaus.
A/N: For a tvd_rareships Comment Fic Party prompt by eenaangel. Originally posted HERE.
Klaus laughs for the first time in millenniums when the blonde baby vampire tells him she’s a threat to him. From that moment, he pegs her as the type of vampire who gets illusions of grandeur when they’re turned. He thinks she’s the one of those vampires who think themselves invincible and end up with a stake through their heart—or, more often than not, decapitated—because of their own idiocy.
He keeps her around purely for entertainment purposes. She’s a beautiful little thing, and Klaus hates to see beauty go to waste. He spoils her and treats her as his queen. Each day, he surprises her with new dresses, new jewelry, new hair ornaments. She’s his little doll.
Of course, Caroline remains as feisty as the day she came to him, and when Klaus is not amused by her modern antics, he’s angered by them. There’ve been many days where she’s upset him because of her willfulness and stubbornness and he’ll hurt her.
Then she’ll be angry at him for a few days, pouting in her quarters like an insolent child, until he bribes her with some finery.
He allows her to introduce him to modern things like movies and games and machines that brown bread for you. He doesn’t tell her that these devices amuse him almost as much as she herself does.
After many years with her company, he kisses her for the first time.
She smiles. “I was wondering when you’d get around to that,” she whispers next to his ear as she runs her small hands over his body. And the gifts that follow their first intimate encounter, he’ll admit, are more for him than for her. Although she seems to enjoy them as well, for she always complains when he tears them in his frantic desire for her.
One night, many lifetimes later, when he’s lying on top of her, she gives him the most seductive smile. “Remember what I said to you when we met?” she asks heatedly.
He nods. “You were so foolish back then,” he admonishes gently as he kisses her throat. “So young and foolish.”
He doesn’t even see it coming.
There’s a look in her eye that he’s never seen before as she continues. “I wasn’t lying,” she insists.
And Klaus is no more.

Summary: He does not allow her to frown at him.
A/N: For a tvd_rareships Comment Fic Party prompt by mistress_britt . Originally posted HERE.
Caroline learns quickly that Elijah doesn’t react quite the way he’s supposed to.
For instance, when she’s angry, he usually laughs and ravishes her so thoroughly that she forgets to be angry. This usually begins a cycle, but he never complains about that either. The man has some wicked stamina after being around for so long.
When she cries, there’s a good chance he’ll leave the room until he doesn’t hear any more sobs—then, maybe he’ll comfort her. Although more often than not, he tells her to stop being ridiculous and ignores the whole episode.
When she’s excited about something, he usually sighs and acts completely uninterested. Sometimes she sees a small smile of contentment, though, and she lives for those.
The other thing she’s noticed is he does not allow her to frown at him. She assumes he doesn’t like it when she whines. Either that, or he doesn’t like seeing her unhappy. She, of course, bets on the former. She learns later, after one rather explosive argument, that it’s neither.
“I never asked to stay, Elijah!” she yells at him. “That was always you. You always asked me to stay.”
“At least I gave you a fucking choice!” he hollers back. “I could have just compelled your compliance.”
“Choice? You want to talk about choice!” She’d of laughed if she wasn’t so incensed. “When was the last time you asked me what I wanted? When was the last time I made a decision? When was the last time you spoke to me about which town we were moving to, which neighborhood we were shacking up in, what job I’m supposed to have, or what the fuck we are to each other?”
“You could have told me any of these things,” he insists forcefully, grabbing hold of her wrists and pinning her against the wall. “You could have said that you didn’t want to live in London or Paris or Salt Lake City. You could have told me you wanted to live in a fucking cottage in the woods instead of the penthouse apartments I set up for us and I’d of listened. You could have told me or asked, Caroline.”
“I shouldn’t have to ask,” she says, a frown starting to appear on her face. “You’re supposed to just know these things.” The problem, of course, is that in order for him to just know, he would have to realize that he’s in love with her, and she doesn’t foresee that happening anytime soon.
“Don’t do that,” he instructs coldly.
“Don’t do what?” she asks; her voice deliberately soft. She’s trying to avoid further arguing.
“That thing with your lip, don’t do it.”
She has no idea what he’s talking about. She frowns again.
“That,” he says, his hands tightening. “I said, don’t do it.”
She stops frowning. “Why?”
“I—it…” he doesn’t seem to have the words.
They stare into each others eyes for so long Caroline doesn’t realize at first that he’s freed her arms from his hold. When she does, she brings one hand up to touch his face.
“When you look at me like that, I remember the way you looked when I first met you,” he finally admits.
“I don’t see a problem with that,” she whispers.
He laughs then. “Of course you wouldn’t,” he says. “You have no idea how badly I wanted you back then. You never knew because I controlled myself around you, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t desire you even back then. And when you look at me like that now, all I want is to do to you what I wished to do to you then.”
She tilts her head slightly. “Why don’t you then?”
“What I had in mind then was not something I would ever do to you, Caroline.”
“But you wanted to do it to me then,” she starts. “So why not do it to me now?”
Elijah sighs, and Caroline can see the frustration on his face. He doesn’t speak for a few moments, and she sees the way he’s trying to find the best way to word what he’s trying to say. “Because…because the way I feel for you now is not how I felt for you then. I didn’t care about you then, Caroline. You were a means to an end, a way to ensure Elena’s cooperation. Now you’re everything. And I’d never demean you in that way.”
She frowns once more before leaning in close. “And what if I asked you to?” she asks in that voice he calls the ‘bedroom’ voice.
She hears his groan and feels his reaction. “Fuck it,” he hisses before pushing her to the floor.
