“Honey, I’m home,” he calls from the front door.

Damon’s voice seems to snap her out of wherever she’d been before, and she takes little Calliope out of her high chair. She walks over to where he’s standing as he takes off his coat and hangs it on the rack.

“Welcome back,” Caroline greets him with a broad smile, kissing him briefly. “How was the trip?”

“Not near as fun as staying home with my two girls,” he answers, taking Calliope from her arms. The blonde haired blue eyed little girl laughs while her father makes funny faces at her. “I’ve missed you two,” he says after a few minuets of playing with his daughter.

“We’ve missed you as well,” she replies, wrapping her arms around him, their daughter in the middle.

“I’m never leaving you again, Caroline,” he whispers in her ear. “I can’t bear to be away from you two like that. I don’t care if the business suffers because someone else has to take the out of town trips; I’m staying with my family.”

Caroline wakes up then and her heart aches when she remembers her little baby girl—the child she’ll never have. Her eyes fill with tears and her lower lip trembles as she hugs her pillow close to her.

She feels Damon’s arms around her and snuggles closer to him, seeking comfort.

It’s not his fault, she reminds herself as she closes her eyes.

Title:  Sympathy

Pairing/Characters:  Damon/Caroline, implied Matt/Caroline & Damon/Elena
Rating:  PG
Word Count:  600
Summary:  Damon hears about Matt's rejection and understands what Caroline's feeling.

When Damon hears Elena talking about Caroline’s latest problem, Damon starts eavesdropping. It’s not a conscious decision on his part, he tells himself; he just needs something to entertain himself while he downs a bag of blood.

He’s rummaging through the freezer looking for a bag of AB negative, his preferred blood type, when he hears Elena say Caroline’s been holed up in her room for the past three days and won’t stop crying.

“What’s wrong?” Stefan asks, and Damon can hear the concern in his voice.

“She healed Matt, Stefan,” Elena explains. “Matt knows, and he thinks Caroline did something to Vicki. She tried to explain all that she knows, but he called her a monster and slammed the door in her face. He won’t talk to her now and Caroline’s devastated.”

At that, Damon sighs and grabs a second blood bag to go with his before speeding through the house, and just as Elena said, Damon finds Caroline curled up on her bed crying. She’s even so preoccupied that she doesn’t hear him enter her room.

She doesn’t even acknowledge him when he sits on the bed next to her and starts playing with her hair either.

His actions seem to sooth her, however, because her sobs diminish in volume as time goes by. Eventually, he hears only the occasional hiccup and sniff.

“Why are you here, Damon?” she asks after a while, even though she’s never even turned around to look at him.

“Thought I’d bring you some food,” he says, remembering his excuse for coming. “Heard you haven’t left in a few days and figured you’d be hungry.” He doesn’t tell her that he understands what she’s going through. He doesn’t tell her that he sympathizes.

Caroline doesn’t contradict him, and he almost smirks. “Don’t want to eat,” she mumbles then. “It hurts too much.”

Although she can’t see him, for she’s facing the wall opposite him, Damon nods. “I know,” he says, “but if you don’t eat soon, you’ll lose control, and we both know you don’t want that.”

“He called me a monster,” she whispers. “Not that he’s wrong, but it still hurts. He hates me. I love him and he hates me.”

“He doesn’t hate you, Blondie,” Damon tells her. “He just doesn’t understand.”

Caroline shakes her head. “No. He hates me. He told me he can’t even stand the sight of me. Do you know what that’s like? To love someone so much and know that they can’t accept who you are?”

He doesn’t know why he says it—maybe it’s just because he’s been sitting on it for so long, and she’s actually someone who won’t judge him for it—but it comes out despite himself. “To have the person you care about most in this world look at you with disgust? Yes, Caroline, I know how that feels. It breaks something in you, something you’re not sure you’ll ever get back.”

She turns to him then. “Do you?” she asks. “Do you get it back?”

“I don’t know. Maybe someday. I haven’t gotten that far yet,” he looks at her sincerely, maybe for the first time since he met her, and continues, “but you’ll never get that far if you don’t eat.” He holds out both blood bags and after a moment, she takes one.

She sits up and they drink in silence. It’s only after they’re both finished that Caroline speaks again. “You love Elena,” she states.

Damon nods.

“Will you always love Elena?”

Damon shrugs. “I don’t know, probably. Will you always love Matt?”

“I don’t know, probably.”

Title:  What a Pair

Summary:  Games. It's their thing. And Damon's getting smarter.

It’s not love—it’s not even like most of the time. But he’s Damon, she’s Katherine, she can’t have Stefan, and he can’t have Elena, so it works.

He fucks her in a way that he could never fuck Elena—all anger and misplaced passion and a desire to hurt her in some way. And all the while she’s letting out little mocking laughs because she knows what he’s doing and she doesn’t care.

It’s her choice to spend the night but they don’t cuddle. Neither is really the cuddling type, at least not with each other, and it’s really better this way, he tells himself. He does, however, find himself staring at her back as he falls asleep.

He raises an eyebrow in the morning when she hands him a glass of blood. “What?” she asks, her tone mocking. He wonders if she’ll ever uses a different tone with him. “Am I not allowed to bring my lover breakfast in the morning?”

Damon ignores the term of—well, not endearment, but close enough—and reaches for the glass. “You didn’t lace it with vervain or in any way contaminate the blood, did you?” he asks before taking the glass.

“What kind of woman do you take me for?” Katherine asks, although he can see the look she doesn’t bother to hide.

He pulls back his hand. Not this time.

“You’re still trying to kill me, Kat?” he asks causally as he stretches. It is morning after all, and in all their activity last night, he may have pulled a muscle. Well, not really, but he can pretend.

“Did you expect anything less?” she singsongs as she exits the room, the glass in hand.

“Of course not,” he answers, smirking himself. The truth is, he doesn’t know what to expect from Katherine, but the game is half the fun. The other half, of course, is the secret plotting of her death—which she’ll never suspect while she thinks he’s still wrapped around her little finger.

What a pair they make, he muses as he lays in bed. What a pair.

Title:  An Offer
Authorsimply_aly
Fandom:  The Vampire Diaries
Pairing/Characters:  Elijah/Caroline
Rating:  PG
Word Count:  475
Summary:  After Klaus is dead, life moves on. Elijah and Caroline talk about their futures and an agreement is reached.
A/N:  For a tvd_rareships Comment Fic Party prompt by ishi_chan. Originally posted HERE.

When they’re watching Klaus’s body burn (the result of a spell by the Bennett witch), Elijah asks Caroline what she’s going to do now. He’s curious about the young vampire who more than proved her strength in the fight they just won.

She shrugs and says, “I don’t know what else I’m going to do but leave.”

He wonders what her plan is. “Are you going to follow Elena?” he asks causally.

Caroline laughs almost bitterly at that. “No,” she tells him. “One part of that trio is already a third wheel. I don’t think they need a fourth.”

“So you’re going off alone?” he asks with a raised eyebrow.

“What other option is there?” she asks, looking at him sadly. “Matt’s dead, and I can’t forgive Tyler anymore than he can forgive me—we’ve tried. My mother doesn’t want to know the truth, no matter how much she thought she could handle it that first time, I will not risk her betrayal too.”

He nods in understanding. “You’re alone.”

“Don’t act so surprised,” she remarks, almost offended by his tone. “It’s not like you couldn’t see it. I have been alone since I was turned…probably even before that. It’s nothing new.”

The hours go by, and they watch in silence as Klaus becomes unrecognizable. Finally, Elijah speaks. “You don’t have to be,” he tells her.

Caroline looks up at him in confusion. “What?” she questions, not understanding his meaning.

“You don’t have to be alone,” he informs her, his tone even.

She raises an eyebrow. “And who would you have me go with? You?”

“We could travel,” he suggests. “I could show you all the estates I own. You could see the world.”

“With you?” she states slowly, as if trying to process this.

Elijah doesn’t know why he’s offering when she clearly does not wish to accompany him, yet there’s something about her. Something that will not let him allow her to wander the world alone when he has so much he can teach her.

“You’ve got to be joking,” she mumbles under her breath, although he hears it quite clearly.

“Do I look like the type of person who jokes?” he asks seriously.

She doesn’t answer, just stares at the fire. They all made a pact to watch Klaus burn to ash. Once that task is complete, they’re all free to make their own eternity. Elijah can’t help but wonder why he’s contemplating having one with this ridiculously stubborn baby vampire who has no respect for her betters.

“Maybe…maybe I’ll tag along for a little while,” she whispers, catching his eyes. “At least until I figure out my next move.” And he’s content with that because he’s convinced he’ll be able to persuade her down the line.

That is, of course, if he can stand her after a century or two.
