Elijah still doesn’t know how it is that she found him. He stays hidden for a reason, and although it is not to avoid newly turned, seventeen-year-old vampire blondes, at the moment, he can’t think of a better reason than that. He decides she must break the stereotype of blondes everywhere if she had managed to track him down—better (as in older) vampires haven’t managed that particular feat yet—and for that reason alone, he allows her to stay.
“Shouldn’t you be at school?” he asks with only a hint of annoyance in his voice, although he hands her a glass of blood even as he speaks.
“Teacher in-service or something,” Caroline says with an eye roll. “And it’s not like I’ll never have the chance to make it up in the next couple hundred years.”
They lapse into silence, and she stares at him. He realizes she’s not exactly impressed with him, like most, but rather, she’s sizing him up. She’s not imbecilic enough to believe she could usurp him, but she is smart enough to know he can be useful to her. And Elijah is beginning to think she can be useful to him as well.
“Why are you here?” he asks conversationally.
“I have questions,” she answers in the same tone. She offers him a small, genuine smile, and he almost smiles back.
“About me?” he asks.
Caroline shakes her head. “Not exactly,” she says. “I want you to tell me everything there is to know about vampires and werewolves and witches and whatever else is out there.”
At this, he laughs. “We’ll be here for days,” he tells her. He’s surprised, however, because he’s actually considering her request.
“I’ve got time,” she replies, “and I really wanna know.”
Coming back to his thoughts from earlier, he has an idea. “You must realize, if I do this, you are indebted to me,” he informs her, making his terms clear without expressing them. He doesn’t yet know what he wants from her, but the girl is clever, and he can always make use of beautiful, clever girls like her.
“Of course,” she says as if she was expecting such a response, and maybe she was. She’s been hanging around that child of Katerina’s long enough to know that knowledge always comes with a price.
He gets up, refills their glasses, hands hers back, and sits down across from her before saying, “Make yourself comfortable then, we’ve a lot of ground to cover.”
